On Edwards

Comments

What really grinds me is all this sanctimonious indignation about infidelity. People are sleeping around all over the place, and news outlets call one instance a scandal. Yeah, right.

I can't help thinking of this classic Onion article...

I know! It's like, "Holy crap! People are having sex with people who aren't their spouses! Oh my goodness!" as if it's never happened before and never will again. I'm not entirely convinced that monogamy is a natural state. Then again, I'm also not convinced that anyone's marriage is my business, except any marriage I might have in the future. It's that simple: Edwards' indiscretion is between him and Elizabeth, period.
I'm certain monogamy isn't a natural state. Personally, I don't even try to be. I'm not married, but I tell anyone I go out with that I'm not monogamous and there's no point in expecting me to be. I sleep well at night, because I'm honest about my inclinations -- I don't give monogamy lip service publicly, then go sneaking around behind a lover's back.

As with the Clintons, the Edwards marriage is their own business.

And we're not electing a president to uphold the sacred cow of monogamy, anyway. As long as a president does a good job running the country, they can sleep with everyone from here to Timbuktu, as far as I'm concerned.

If you look at great leaders throughout history, a rather large percentage of them had problems being monogamous.
