Well, not that long, but I feel like I owe you folks an update.
I'm busy, busy, busy. When I'm not at work, I'm at rehearsal for The Diary of Anne Frank, which opens on October 12. That's right, kids, hell week starts next week. It's usually not hellish at all with Falcon, Ted (and most of the other directors I've worked with there) do a good job of making sure things are pretty well organized. I'm finishing up costume stuff-- making my list, checking it twice-- and we're doing last-minute tweaks to that thing we call "acting". It's all pretty good.
I saw Dracula at the Playhouse in the Park. It was sort of eh-- blocking was awkward, they couldn't figure out if it was supposed to be "campy" or "melodramatic". Costuming was trite, and the actors couldn't decide which accent to hold. The special effects and the set were fabulous, though.
I realize I haven't seen a movie or even stayed at home to watch a movie in such a long time. I spent last Friday night watching episodes of Oz (though right now my OnDemand is being a bitch and tells me that EVERYTHING "isn't available"-- argh) after having a drink with Fred and Claire at Milton's. That was the first time I'd done anything like that in months. I look forward to, after Anne Frank is over, doing that more, particularly since I just bought the first season of Dexter on DVD.
Speaking of TV, what I'm watching:
- I turned in my thesis yesterday after work. My grade is in, my fees are paid, I am now a Master. Of what, I'm not sure.
- I just finished paying off all of my credit card bills but one, which I'm throwing more money at. This is good, and a good feeling. I have enough student loan debt, I don't need credit card debt, too.
- I had a great lunch meeting with one of the men I met during my staged reading with the Cincinnati Playwrights Initiative. He's going to farm out some copyediting and writing work to me, as well as keep me in mind for a couple of parts. The former is extra money, and the latter is a nice confidence booster.
- I had a nice long talk with Tracy, the assistant director of my show, about my part and how I'm playing Miep. It was really good-- she's probably the best director I know and have worked with-- and gave me some insight to some of the issues I have as an actor (I tend to be stylized) and how to get Miep to be real and natural. Though Miep isn't a huge part-- 50 lines or so-- she's incredibly complex and very challenging. Hopefully, this will improve my performance. I'd love to play fewer "character" roles-- if I can do Miep, maybe I can prove that I can do more "mainstream" roles as well. I think I have a reputation as not being able to do them, which I can, I just don't know why I have a mental block when I'm in front of my normal group of theater friends.
- Speaking of the staged reading, a week ago I got together with CPI and, at the last minute, took on the role of Caroline in a play called Borderliners. It was a very cool little play-- about two people who die and go to heaven and God gives them a "do-over". Caroline starts out as a fundamentalist Christian and, when she gets her do-over, ends up being a prostitute who killed her boyfriend because he molested her child. Very, very different waters from the ones I normally swim in, for sure. I got nothing but compliments. Several people asked where I studied (Um, UC Department of English) and really just were amazed that I did "such a good job" when I'd had less than 24 hours of preparation. It really bolstered my confidence. Again, I tend to get pigeonholed into "character" roles, and this one was very complex. I wish some of the people I normally audition for could have seen it, because it was just so different.
- At lunch today I'll complete my passport stuff. I'm so excited I could spit.
- I rearranged my apartment a little last night. I got most of the feet on my ottoman (I got frustrated and the fourth will have to be fixed tonight), and moved the chair to the other side of the couch. I put photos in all of my picture frames, and put my makeup in the bathroom so I'm not running around like an idiot every morning as I get ready. Tonight, after rehearsal, I'll rework my closet. I think I'll put my shoes on the top shelf (where I can actually see them) and my boxes and such on the ground (where I can't see them). I have some plastic containers that I'm going to take over to my mom's house, because I just don't have room for them. I'm trying to figure out if dolls are appropriate for a pushing-30 single woman-- I have several my mother's given me, and though I really like them, I'm not so sure I want them out. Maybe I'll have her store them, too.
...and this is a good thing, even if my jellies are sort of slushy.
I woke up this morning (got myself a.. no, I didn't.) at 7:00 when the alarm went off. I turned it off to sleep a few minutes longer....
and woke up at 8:44. Oops.
Showered, dressed, makeuped and STILL made it to work by 9:15. I rock.
First real rehearsal for Anne Frank was last night. The girls in our cast are so talented, it should be a great show. The adults are, too, but it's not called the Diary of Miep Gies or the Diary of Alfred Dussel, so the fact that our Anne is fantastic is doubly important.
The weekend was fantastic, too. On Friday night, I saw Death at a Funeral, which was pretty darn funny (full of British humor, classic poop humor, and a "The More You Know" sort of message at the end) and filled myself a little too much with King Wok. Mmm. Saturday was spent doing a little shopping (I needed a new drying rack for clothing), had a drink at Milton's, dinner at Arnold's and then a CD release party at Southgate House for the Chocolate Horse's new album, which is really good.
I also picked up Over the Rhine's new album, The Trumpet Child. I have tickets to THEIR CD launch party on the 31st, which I'm pretty excited about.
This week: rehearsal Thursday, otherwise? Blissful peace.
which is pretty much EXACTLY what I had been looking for, so I wore it to the theater on Friday and the artistic director loved it, so I bought another one for Cobweb (we only have two fairies) . Much cuter, and much better for our adorable little "dance" we do for the lullaby.
Our dress rehearsal was Wednesday, and Mikki came to take pictures. They are beautiful, but I'm going to wait for Mikki to post them before I post them here. We caught up on gossip, life, all of that good stuff until nearly midnight. Oops.
The first two shows were a blast-- the audience loved it, and many of them said it was the best Shakespeare they'd seen. One particularly tough critic said that it was how Shakespeare intended for Midsummer to be-- and that he'd approve. Pretty high praise, if you ask me. We had fun, the audience had fun-- and that's all that counts, really. Supposedly, City Beat was there reviewing on Friday, so I'll post that when it appears.
I can't rave enough about the cast, as well. Everyone is wonderful-- there's a reason I like Falcon so much-- and very talented. I just absolutely adore everyone, and I will be truly sad when this show is over.
If you're local, come and see the show!
So Vanities closed on Saturday. It was nice-- I had a couple of friends in the audience (including my cube-mate coworker), and both enjoyed the show. We had great energy, and the crowd was responsive (which helps so much in a comedy, it really does). I got both Kasmira and Julia bottles of Aquolina Pink Sugar as a little gift, and Abby bought all three of us these really pretty, customized compacts with our names on it. I'm really going to miss those girls, but Kasmira and I are going to start exercising together, so we'll still see a lot of each other (hopefully!).
Build for Midsummer started on Sunday. It's going to be a very pretty, ethereal set. I, since I am incredibly inept with things like power tools, worked on costumes. Wendy, Tracy and I went into the costume storage and pulled out a lot of lovely things-- I think everything will look gorgeous. I'm actually ahead of where I normally am two weeks before opening, so I'm pretty thrilled. Tonight, I learn choreography for the Fairy Dance, which sort of freaks me out-- I'm not really a dancer. This is despite about ten years of ballet training (that I can do!) and a lot of musical theater training.
Oh, well.
Only one more weekend of this show, and three more of the next show to go!
Opening night was okay-- 400-500 lines a piece, and we did pretty well. All three of us are harder on ourselves than we should be. Saturday and Sunday went well, too.
I need to amp up my costuming for Midsummer. I have my costumes, Bottom's costumes and Starveling's costumes finished, which doesn't SOUND like a lot, but is, considering how much stuff I'm using from the costume gallery. I'll start going to Goodwill after work and before rehearsal this week, and things should be fairly neatly in place by next week. Rock on with MY bad self. I need to make sure to go to the tailor and have a couple of things fitted for myself-- sleeves shortened, hemming-- but that's it. It's a lot harder to do this when doing a show AND working.
